House Education Committee Chair, Gerald Stebelton, has revealed his intentions yet again. His first step towards a real review of the Common Core Standards seems questionable at best. He has scheduled a Pro-Common Core presentation to be made by Greater Columbus area district superintendents. This is not surprising given his candor included in this May 1st statement to StateImpact Ohio:
The chair of the Ohio House Education Committee says he’ll fight “kicking and screaming” any effort to repeal the Common Core, a new set of expectations for what students should know and be able to do in math and English at each grade level. Rep. Gerald Steblelton tells Gongwer News Service he is a strong supporter of the Common Core. When asked if it is possible the General Assembly could decide to repeal the standards, Mr. Stebelton said, “Possibilities are always there, but this chairman of this committee is not going to do that.”
In light of his clear intent to shove Common Core down our throats, one has to wonder just how “open and honest” this first attempt will be, especially given that he is not allowing public comments or an opposition presentation. Please attend and make your position known to the superintendents who are helping to advance this federal agenda. This is education without representation.
* Call Chairman Stebelton’s office 614-466-8100 and ask to be added to the Education Committee’s email distribution list to receive updates on future hearings. Ask when Ohioans can expect to participate in a thorough vetting of Common Core.
